The beneficial effects of a steam sauna

Close your eyes and feel how the warm steam gently envelops you. The moist heat penetrates deep into your skin and relieves tension while revitalising your senses. In the steam sauna, you can forget the stresses of everyday life and let your mind wander.

What is the difference between a steam sauna and a dry sauna?

While the dry sauna circulates hot air with low humidity, the steam sauna creates a pleasantly humid climate by vaporising water. This enables a gentler and more gentle form of heat, which is particularly suitable for sensitive people. In the dry outdoor or indoor sauna, temperatures can generally range from 60°C upwards to over 100°C. In the steam bath, the humidity of the steam generator means that you can feel the relaxing effect of the sauna throughout your body even at low temperatures from 40°C.

Both the steam bath and the steam shower are often used as a synonym for steam sauna. At Küng, you can of course always get a customised steam sauna. However, the steam shower stands out because the glass cabin is specially designed to save space. This means it also fits into smaller bathrooms, like a shower, and can be used as such. In the steam cabin, you can therefore celebrate your own personal sauna ritual, while a steam bath can accommodate two or more people, depending on the model.

The history of the steam sauna

The tradition of the steam sauna goes far back into the history of human culture. Even in ancient times, steaming baths were valued as a place of cleansing, relaxation and social interaction. Over time, different types of steam saunas have developed, each with their own unique tradition and atmosphere.

Steam sauna types

Roman steam sauna: Inspired by the ancient Roman baths, this type of sauna offers a luxurious experience that invites you to relax. The walls and seats of the Roman steam sauna are often clad in fine marble, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also provides excellent thermal insulation. The smooth, cool stone lends the room a sublime aura and helps to ensure that the heat from the steam is pleasantly reflected. In the caldrium, the humidity is 100% and the temperature is between 40°C and 50°C. The tepidarium, on the other hand, envelops sauna-goers with warm steam only slightly above their own body temperature - 38°C to 40°C - and is therefore particularly well tolerated.

Hamam: The oriental hammam steam sauna takes you into a world from 1001 nights. The focus here is on cleansing and relaxation while you are surrounded by warm water and fragrant oils. A typical hammam is an experience that lasts several hours and takes you through various rooms with different temperatures. Today, the hammam in Switzerland is mostly found as a commercial sauna, as in this tradition, as in the Roman baths, the sauna serves as a meeting place.

Bio-Sauna:

The modern BIOSA® from Küng combines the benefits of steam and infrared radiation to offer a holistic heat treatment that revitalises body and mind. Instead of a hot infusion, you can enjoy pleasant temperatures of up to 60°C in the bio sauna. However, the modern control system can be set to different modes with higher temperatures.

Russian steam sauna:

In the Russian banya, you will experience a traditional sauna culture in which intense heat alternates with refreshing infusions. An experience that invigorates body and soul. The temperature in the banya can reach over 100°C. The infusions of water or ice, mixed with essential oils, are all the more refreshing. Here it is customary to soak birch branches in water. The birch water is turned into an aromatic infusion (Wenik infusion).

Irish steam sauna:

The Irish steam sauna is a unique variant with a fresh air supply that is enriched with aromatic herbs and essential oils and offers an intense but refreshing sauna experience. Alternating between dry sauna, steam cabin and refreshment is part of the ritual, as is a stimulating brush massage. With temperatures of around 50°C, this steam sauna is also suitable for children and senior citizens. However, it requires several rooms, which is why this model is also more likely to be found in commercial premises.

What are the health benefits of a sauna with steam?

Regular use of a steam sauna can offer numerous health benefits:

  • Promotion of blood circulation
  • Relief from muscle pain
  • Cleansing the skin: toxins and sebum are sweated out, the pores are opened
  • Moisturises the airways, which can help prevent colds

It also helps to relax the body and mind and reduce stress.

How to use a steam sauna correctly

To enjoy the full effect of a steam sauna, regulating the temperature and humidity is just as important as keeping an eye on your own health. A relaxing visit to the sauna traditionally includes refreshing drinks, sometimes also small snacks - and for good reason: if you sweat a lot, you should moisturise sufficiently. We recommend adding water with refreshing mint or lemon or a juice spritzer to your feel-good ritual at home before and after the steam bath.

  1. Before the steam bath, a cleansing shower prepares you for the experience
  2. Enjoy the warm steam from the steam generator or from the infusion for as long as you feel comfortable, between 10 and 30 minutes depending on the temperature and your condition
  3. During your sauna session, you can enjoy your oasis of calm made of glass and stone just the way you like it: With sounds to make you feel good, infrared light or iridescent lighting, with bubbles or, of course, with essential oils in the infusion
  4. Cool down gently after the heat: start with lukewarm water, which you run upwards from the feet. The water temperature can gradually become cooler over several passes
  5. Great for the skin: Apply to damp skin immediately after showering
  6. Time to relax: drink enough and make yourself comfortable on the sofa or in bed for half an hour

After a visit to the in-house steam sauna, you will feel completely revitalised and refreshed. Treat yourself to a break from everyday life and enjoy the beneficial effects of this timeless wellness ritual.
